At this stage, at least in the current state of society I live in, and in my experience, it is predominantly gay men and straight women between which it occurs, perhaps because of limited "complications" occurring in that friendship. A gay man and a straight woman as BFF's is quite common.

From limited experience with a gay coworker, I'd have to agree. We flirt shamelessly with each other; and it means absolutely nothing except we're good friends. I'd pick him to go hang out with at the mall over any g/f I have, LOL.
