At this stage, at least in the current state of society I live in, and in my experience, it is predominantly gay men and straight women between which it occurs, perhaps because of limited "complications" occurring in that friendship. A gay man and a straight woman as BFF's is quite common.

Yes, but I was there, and didn't pick up on anything that could be construed as flirting. He was just being nice -- to both of us.
