PC with XP Serv Pk 3 won't Sync or Eject Kobo

I received a Kobo as an Xmas gift from my kids. I managed to install the mobile app on my Blackberry, then I spent all yesterday trying to install it on my PC. Called support to find out that I have to "manage my library" in order to have my PC recognize my Kobo. That would have been a handy piece of information on the glitzy Quick Start Guide that was provided with my Kobo.
Eventually, my PC did recognize my Kobo, but I did not have the installation files for Windows.
Called support again. Danielle told me I could load installation files from Kobo site. Did that. Kobo icon appeared on desktop. I could log in, but could not access anything without the program erroring out, and shutting down. Cannot set up my account beyond my name and password.
I installed and uninstalled the files several times, and shut down my PC also.
Called support again. This time the tech person had me do a factory re-set of the Kobo. Told her all that I had done. I closed out my Spy Doctor, and then my PC had the Kobo installation files. Re-installed once again, and still cannot sync or eject my Kobo.
F.Y.I. I cannot eject using the icon on the bottom right of my PC screen. It says Mass Storage Device, and then when I try to close it, I get 3 options: Mass Storage Device, Generic Device, Kobo eReader. None of them will eject, PC says try later, close out other programs. Nothing else is running. Cannot eject in control panel either.
Tech Lady says to install elsewhere and see if that works. I was on the phone with her for over 2 hours. I was either on the phone or on hold with Kobo for 4 hours, once they even disconnected me without speaking to anyone.
Tech Lady says that if I can get my Kobo to sync with my Account on another PC then I could just download books wirelessly.
Anyone else have this problem? Any idea on how I can get my own home laptop that is using Windows XP Service Pack 3, to sync and eject my Kobo eReader? The amount of time spent on this has been ridiculous.
Thanks!
