Good to have your company, Ron. The problem with PDF is that it's, basically, a for-print digital format and doesn't always convert well to other formats -- especially evident if you try to convert a PDF that carries eccentric layout, fonts, graphics, etc.

Your laptop should handle PDF fine, as do netbooks, tablets and a few ebook-dedicated readers. If you do land yourself a reader, though, you will generally find -- where regular text is concerned -- that ePub or (in the case of Kindle) Mobi formats provide a more satisfying reading experience.
