Since librarian mentioned Adobe Digital Edition (ADE), I will assume library ebooks are in ADE DRM format. It is highly doubtful ADE desktop works with iPad.

however Bluefire (and maybe Stanza) do work with ADE DRM ebooks. You will have to transfer the ebook files over to iPad by alternative methods such as email or iTunes. Take a look at this page on how to do that.

(I haven't tried it myself, but I don't see why it wouldn't provided ebook DRM is in expected format)
