I confess, I don't know how Iliads handle PDFs and password protection. (By the way, don't call an Iliad an "e-reader," or you'll incur the wrath of Jon!

Call it an e-book reader.) PDF files can be created with a password to open (or edit) the file. For small enough distribution, you could create individual files with unique passwords for each.
