If you do play with the Metadata editing window, mayhap you could find room for custom and default columns on one tab (default on one side and custom on the other and comments at the bottom?). I rarely use the cover and format editor. Those two would fit on one tab (especially if the the entries weren't so spread out) and the format and cover fields would fit on a second tab. I would hate to see three tabs.
