Yes, they are homemade and the meat is beef. These tamales are typical from the northwest and somewhat different from the tamales made in the rest of Mexico. The tamales can be served alone or with "party beans" (black beans mixed with melted cheese and a bit of chipotle pepper), and usually accompanied with a cup of black coffee.
