Charging Stopped error message

I've had a PRS600 for a year with no problems, but I can't say the same for my new PRS950. The first charge (on Christmas Day) went well, but after only 5 days I have just one "box" left. I doubt that I've had more than 200 page turns, so this battery life is a bit disappointing.

In any case, I decided to charge the unit today and connected to the Reader Library. Nothing. After a few hours of trying various scenarios, I called Sony support. Support guy suggested a soft reset (which I had already tried thanks to info in this forum). We did the soft reset and nothing. Then, he suggested resetting all the defaults after a soft reset. That did the trick until I shut everything down for a while. When I came back to my PC and tried to connect and charge again I got the original problem again.

With a lot of tinkering, I discovered that it would work IF I did a soft reset followed by a default reset followed by turning off the computer, connecting the reader and then turning the computer on again. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and that helped, but just for that time. Back to the same ole, same ole in later attempts.

Right now, I've got things charging but I'd like to know what's going on. Any guesses?

I'm using a quad core computer with Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest version of Reader software.
