Well, I checked. Apparently, when you lend out a book, it disappears from your Kindle, even if your wifi is off.

So I guess the Kindle 3 Wifi periodically turns on and "phones home". What I still don't know is, what would happen if you weren't in Wifi range? I assume the lending wouldn't go through unless you were.
