It's not about selling Kindles per-se; it is by satisfying customers (It was *the* most requested storefront feature.) and selling *ebooks*.
This kind of gifting isn't just for holidays or special ocassions:
I ran into an interesting title on the Deal of the day page for Kindle titles ($0.99 promo) so I bought a copy and gifted another to a friend with an attached note pointing out that it sounded interesting. It is the first of a trilogy so if either or both of us likes it the rest of the series will follow.
It's a nice small feature but you add a lot of nice small features and pretty soon they add up to a clearly superior product.
