Both are indeed the newest Pearl display (as already stated).
I attended a focus group, and the Sony had a
microscopically glossier screen that the Kindle 3. I did a side-by-side, and after looking for several minutes, I noticed it. It is so slight, I am not kidding when I say
microscopic. There is no way you could tell unless you had the two side-by-side... and
really examined it.
With my own PRS-650, I don't notice it at all, and wonder if it was maybe just the demo unit they had in the focus group. And trust me, I've looked for the glossiness.
The previously mentioned PRS-600 is horribly glossy due to the overlay -- and I agree that's probably what you saw. It's so bad, I was happy to rid myself of it, especially for the $75 trade in.
The Kindle 3 also uses a much better font than Sony Readers. To me,
that made a real difference. I would bet dollars to donuts that's what you really noticed if you were looking at a PRS-650 or PRS-350. I've even searched online for the Kindle font to use on the Reader, but haven't tried it yet.
