I had to look it up, too.
Western
Australia as opposed to
Washington. We really are a bit NA centric here in the USA, aren't we?

That's why it is so nice - and often eye-opening - to belong to international forums like those on Mobileread.
As kindlekitten said, the skins don't protect the Kindle, or other eReaders, the way covers do, but they do offer some protection from minor scratches and make the Kindle easier to clean, as far as smudges and such are concerned. They are more a way to personalize your Kindle and to keep the economy going (gotta keep spending money or the world economy will collapse, right??) than a way to fully protect the Kindle. They are relatively inexpensive and do add to the Kindle experience, in my opinion; just get one and ignore your husband's need for justification.
A skin plus a good protective cover is the route I chose to go.
By the way, since this isn't really spelled out on the DecalGirl site, you can have them make you a custom skin using your own photograph or graphic of choice, for a really unique skin. You just have to email them with the request and they will tell you what they need from you in order to make you a custom skin. It only costs an extra $5.00 (USA) for this, too, which is quite reasonable, I think.
