i didn't switch - i plan to use both. if i was getting my first reader, it probably would be a kindle.
but the kindle has all those free ebooks, and often new ones pop up including best sellers and recent books that are actually on my to-read list, plus daily specials for $2.99 each. and i've found some older novels i used to read in ebook format on amazon and nowhere else. one was a whopping 99 cents.
then if you read a lot of mobile read threads, you'll hear many great stories about kindle customer service. as far as i can tell, they may have the best customer service of any ebook reader. hopefully i won't need customer service, but if i do, this is definitely a company that takes care of their customers.
and there's a huge selection of covers for it, which was nice because i really love the cover i got.
one last thing that made me want a kindle. my cybook reads mobi, which is nice but it's being supported less and less. a lot of recent books by larger and small publishers no longer seem to come in mobi. amazon seems to have really invested their resources in the kindle, probably more than any other reader. that makes me hope that the kindle book formats will continue to be used for the long haul. i could be proved wrong, but amazon does seem very dedicated to their ebook reader.
