There's actually a fix for this on the ADE site. Apparently a number of different non-mainstream readers can have a problem authenticating, but it's only the first connection that's the problem.
Don't ask me what the fix is - I've forgotten.
But then I don't need it any more. It's a key combination to press, something like Ctrl-E, when the two machines are connected.
