I admit I don't understand this, or is the process I outlined above is still too cumbersome for your liking? One thing I suppose the designers could have done is separate the notes from highlights and bookmarks, but having the former associated with one of the latter makes sense in terms of providing context. Otherwise, what large number of buttons? Bookmarking a page, for example, is a one-step process with no buttons involved. Highlighting takes one or two more extra steps.
