Three times the . . . surface area or diameter. I hadn't really decided. The truth is that it doesn't matter at the time. Twice the size or three times the size are arbitrary amounts that aren't necessary. I was just trying to figure out if size would directly effect the length of the days

It is definitely being handled offstage. At no point in the books does it say anything other than "The world is vast". It is done in a way to give the reader an impression of size, which, in the context of the book, does not lead the reader to question specifics of how or why.
As far as the rest goes, the characters know more about their own world than I do. They tell the reader what's relevant to the story.
