1) Those pending transactions are just B&N testing your card to make sure it's valid. They shouldn't actually go through and will disappear in a couple of days if the system is working correctly. If you do end up getting charged, just phone up the B&N help people (use the option for "digital support") and they'll take care of it.
2) Once you've got your gift card entered, it'll be deducted from first and your credit card will only be touched once you've run out of GC money (or during the periodic "check to make sure the CC is still valid" test transactions B&N seem to run every so often). You do need to keep a credit card on file, because it's the key to "unlocking" your books in your account.
