Barnes and Noble encourages you to leave the device on all the time (unless your charge is below 10%), even when charging.
You can set the screen to timeout (go to sleep) at 2 mins, 5 mins, 10, 15, and 1 hour. When the device is asleep, you just need to hit the big old physical "n" button on the front, and it will wakeup so you can then unlock it. I believe a quick press of the power button will also bring it out of sleep.
If the unit is on, but sleeping, and you hold the power button down for very long, the unit is likely rebooting.
Maybe someone else can chime in with the issue regarding the state of the last read book ...
