I have previously done exactly as you suggested - several times, in fact - all to no avail. Just to make sure I am not at fault, I tried it again.
Same result - no firmware upgrade. I am loathe to remove/replace the card because - although my 302 is brand new - there is some issue with the slot it goes in - I cannot get the card out easily and need to resort to sliding a piece of adhesive tape into the slot so it sticks to the card and I can then pull it out.
All I see displayed apart from the splash screen, is a "Device is running in safe mode..." message. Nothing else.
On top of the other quality issues there in this this device, this is making me quite exasperated. I have been in contact with PB support, and also the supplier about this. I'm awaiting a reply, but at this stage I see the purchase as a waste of money.
