You did mention Vade Mecum, for the clueless it is Plucker for Pocket PC.

One thing I dislike about Pocket Pc is Activesync, it's just harder to recover data after a hard reset. Things on Outlook stays there but most of the datas created by applications are not backup unless you specifically tell activesync to do a complete backup (which takes a long time). Backup to card is still the way to go (keep a spare at home), since if you somehow lost the handheld, so goes too the card.
