Thanks so much (and Merry Christmas). Amazon is sending me a new kindle--after long sessions with two different representatives (both very nice) But about the cover: both representatives I talked to said the official leather cover was not the problem. The first one said one of the covers might be the problem but the problem cover had been removed from the website. He didn't seem to know which cover was the problem. I checked and mine was still on the website, so...I figured it was ok. But I will try that and see what happens. Since I just bought kindles (with the same cover) for my son and my boyfriend, that's worrisome.
My issues just got worse after I posted. I couldn't even turn the thing on half the time. But I'll try taking the cover off and report back.
