I think the Nook (classic) 3G also works similarly, and is free (edit: apparently not so similarly). I think. Have you used a browser on any of them? It should do fine for getting your email and looking up locations and such. I suppose it's even adequate for online newspapers, with some font adjustment and a lot of scrolling.
