Unhappy What is wrong with my Nookcolor?

I purchased the NC about 2 weeks ago for Christmas. I got home, charged it up, turned it on, went through the intro movie, set up wi-fi, downloaded a book - all OK. So I wrapped it up and put it under the tree.

I unwrapped it this evening. Battery was so low it told me to wait 15 minutes before using. After 30 minutes, while charging, I turned it on.

It goes through the load up process, I hear a chime, then I get a screen with a clock at the top (correct time), the large logo in middle of screen, and a small logo bottom left of screen.

However, it is totally unresponsive otherwise. Pushing the home button, or the small loggo at bottom of screen does nothing. Soft rebooting does nothing other than turn the unit off, and when turn it back on again, same screen as above.

I thought when turned on, the unit should go to the shelves or something. what am I doing wrong?
