I never understood the kindle-cracking issues either. I don't think it was from removal from the cover, but was due to people attempting to open the cover from the wrong side and prying the Kindle up, snaaaap. Mostly I think this was done by young children or possibly chimpanzees.
The leather seems pretty hardy, so I don't think it would start to fall apart, or most likely it would outlast the Kindle itself. But I understand the concern. There are flip-style covers designed specifically for that purpose,too. I know a lot of people enjoy using the kindle cover-free, though. Using the cover solely as storage will likely make it last 50-200 years, so that is one benefit.
