Yes, that's right. Go to Manage My Kindle on your Amazonpage and set Your Personal Charge Limit to $0,00.
The documents will then go to xxxxxxx @ free.kindle.com.
And this also goes for the 3G version. The Kindle will get the documents the moment there's a wifi-connection.

I would search/ask on the forum about the quality of the conversion from PDF to mobi that Kindle offers. I think I've read different reports about that.
