It would be nice for calibre to store (i.ex) that "Mario Vargas Llosa" is "LLosa Vargas, Mario" even if momentarily there are no books of him in the library.
My user scenario is that I don't have the full library on calibre. I add a bunch of books, convert & synchro to Kindle and later on I delete the books from library and load a new set of books. So I always lose all the author sortings arrangements made before.

The reason I said this. If you make the change to the Author sort IN TAGS BROWSER,
that makes a change in the 'Authors' information, Not the 'Books' information.
No books with that Author! Calibre cleans up unused names: <bins, your change>
Since I only ADD books (and cull out duplicates), My Author list never gets shorter

and my sort edits stick around.
