Thanks for your responses ... here's more info ...
* using ADE to sideload ePubs only ~ NEVER use the Kobo app ~ hate it!!!
* it happens with various books - there doesn't seem to be any consistency in chapter length, some are long, some just a page or two - and not one particular author/publisher
* have tried all the various suggestions
* it's not related to battery level either
I find it a little frustrating, but not enough to make me want to kick the reader!!!
