Ooh, I'll have to check that out!

I adore Dudley Pope's books. His main series is the Ramage books, set during the Napoleonic wars. Think Hornblower with a bit more self-confidence (but not as much as Aubrey! )

His other series, for those earlier in the thread who asked for something a bit different, are the Yorke books. The first four are set in mid-16th Century Jamaica after the English Civil War and are about a privateer called Ned Yorke. The next two are about a descendant of Ned Yorke's and set during World War 2.

As for PD naval fiction, one of my eternal favourites is Captain Blood, set during the late 1600s. And it is, of course, available in the MobileRead library.
