Did Amazon request that the Kindle be returned? How do we know that they made a mistake? I don't think it's so inconceivable that they shrugged off the loss just be done with the ordeal and avoid displeasing a potentially long term customer.
Personally I would have informed them and asked if that was their intent. But deciding not to second guess their actions doesn't quite warrant the OP being considered some kind of villain. Granted it may be a troll, but even hypothetically..
Maybe register it and see what happens. If they say "Hey, you ain't supposed to have that", send it back.
