Not that I would ever fancy reading a book on my computer but it seems bizarre that if I download an ebook from Amazon it only works on one device and not all Kindle devices/apps registered to that account.

You are correct. The versions are different and decoded differently. In order to remove drm, the current tools appear to require downloading the kindle-4-pc version and de-drm-ing them on the pc. Then it could be loaded on the kindle as a stripped version. (I gather that k1 worked differently from this thread).
And to the second issue, taking a copy of the version that was downloaded directly to (or for it) kindle to a pc will not allow the k-4-pc to read that version.
Now, what I'm personally not clear about, was the version of the first book I got for my Blackberry with its kindle-reader. It seemed to be a prc book and could be read on the kindle when I got the k3. Without decoding (stripping drm)???????
