Here are two more quotes from the above mentioned thread on Amazon. They provide an explanation and a solution to this problem.

Quote:
For those a little curious as to what's going on internally with the non-lit Amazon cover for the 3rd Gen Kindle, check out David Jone's EEVBlog Episode 109:
http://www.eevblog.com/2010/09/03/ee...fi-6-teardown/

Skip to around time 6:00 in the review and you'll see exactly what's inside the Kindle 3 where those clips exist. Now, if the clips ARE metal, and are conducting current when they shouldn't (as when the paint covering the bare metal of the cover clips is worn off) that could be the problem. Those folks who have applied a non-conductive layer to the underside of the clips (like scotch tape, or something similar), are just making sure that the clip is once again non-conductive.

Hey folks with the non-lighted covers like myself, If you really like your cover and don't think you need to change, here is the fix for our kindles.

Take a hole punch side piece of scott tape and place it on the inside of the bottom clasp, be sure that the tape doesn't hang off the edges, also be sure its in the middle of that tab. This will prevent the contact being made. After that its kindling as normal. been problem free ever since.

Since I don't work for Amazon, I can say things like this.
