I have to second viviena there: Patric O'Brian is definitely worth a read.

Bernard Cornwell's works also include Sharpe's Adventures, a series (novels and short stories) that charts Sharpe's progress in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. The stories are the basis for an ITV television series with Sean Bean that ran in the nineties.
