Good point: Creating smaller bookstores means you can create more of them, spread into areas that wouldn't support one big store. The space of a small used bookstore, available at most strip-malls and shopping centers, would be enough for one of those mini-bookstores.
The downside is, they could end up as heavily-franchised cookie-cutter shops, like most fast-food shops, and might not be considered too highly by the media and the public. But if done properly, they could be very popular.
