The stuff I don't know about using my reader

I have had a Sony PRS-650 for a couple of months. I really like it but there is a heap of things I don't know about it. I use Sony Library software but that is about it. I don't know anything about how I would use the Adobe Digital Editions software or Calibre etc.. I would love to know how these things are different and the same and the advantages. I am in Australia and I usually buy books for A&R and Borders (with a very limited range and at inflated prices). I know there are geographical restrictions but I don't quite understand where the line is between legal and not legal and why it has to be so complicated. It would be great if someone can point me in the direction of some basic information to help me get my head around some of the known and unknown unknowns... please.
