Sons and Lovers was Lawrence's third novel. It was considered shocking at the time, and went through four drafts before he found one that a publisher would accept - even that was cut by about 80 pages. To modern eyes the passionate scenes may seem a bit laboured; the autobiographical sequences about his mother and his mining background are the freshest and most moving.
