I was running 1.4 Kobo original. I did not do the factory reset first. I installed the software 1.81 with the seven step guide and it seemed ok. But checking the files, some would not open (I had run into this once before and replacing the db fixed it). I resorted to the db replacement using the 1.8 as per the sticky. Seemed easy enough and I was able to connect with ADE and Kobo Desktop. ePubs opened from the reader in the ADE software and everything seemed recognised. But standalone, the epubs would not open: please authorise reader. But the reader was recognised as authorised when plugged in. When I finally did the factory reset at this point, and had to re-enter date and time, when connected to ADE it asked me to re-authorise then.
So a few hoops, but everything is now apparently working as expected.
It sounds like a factory reset should be the first order of business, not an optional extra. But I'm just reporting my experience. Had the seven step thing worked, it is a nice, elegant upgrade path hand holding the user and showing all the expected steps and results.
