According to the Nook Unbound blog, it's a sort of prequel novella, designed to lead you into one of the author's novels. Something about vampire ninjas. Or ninja vampires.

And also the first Smashwords self-pub Free Fridays book they've ever put up. Sometimes I wonder at their selection process.
