It's the other way around here! It was never a common practice to hold doors for people in old Japan. It's wasn't a male/female thing. It's a 'strangers are enemies,' idea of Confucian ideology. It's only the younger folks who are doing it now. Today's younger people have learned the custom from TV and movies, while the old folks let the door slam on each other.

I took my 89 year old mother to the Korean market with me the other day for the first time. I gave her a shopping cart to push and told her to not let herself get pushed around in there, and if she needed to get close to something just push on in.

I wouldn't normally say, or do, that but in there you have to be fairly aggressive to get your shopping done!
