That can be configured entirely the way you like it. By default, Calibre assumes the author field to be "firstname lastname" and the author_sort field to be "lastname, firstname". However, there's a tweak available configuring what Calibre assumes to be the correct content of author_sort, if you edit that, you can set the author field to be "lastname, firstname" and the author_sort field to be the same. If you really wanted, I guess you could also set both fields to be "firstname lastname".
