I ordered a 650 Monday, it shipped Tuesday, and I received it today. Not to rub it in (sorry), but to say...

It is definitely NOT discontinued!

Someone started this rumor in another thread the last time the 650 sold out, and there is absolutely no evidence to support it.

a) Remember the Kindle? At least one revision sold out immediately and had a supremely long wait -- months -- for restock. We're looking at something similar.

b) The 6'' e-Ink screen is the most popular size. The PRS-650 is the only Sony with that screen. That's the one that's most desirable, and most likely to sell out.

c) See (b)! You don't discontinue the model with the screen that been historically the most popular! Right after introduction no less!!

If you can be patient, I would say wait for the restock, or go to a Sony Style store. I'm betting those are still in stock. You may also try calling a Sony Style store and seeing if they'll ship one to you after you explain the stock issue.
