Kindle DX might be a good fit...larger screen for those PDF patterns.
The free 3G browser is the killer feature for me, and for someone without wifi in the house, seems like it would be even more so.

While the Kindle can't do library books (unless you're willing to strip the DRM and convert them), in your wish list, you listed free access to gmail well above the ability to access library books.

The Nook can do the gmail and the library books, but it has a smaller screen than the DX, not as good for reading PDFs in the car, and if email is a big deal, as it is for me, I like the real keyboard on the Kindle far better than the Nook's interface for typing.

A color tablet of of some kind does sound like it would be good, especially for reading in a car at night (you'd need a book light for any of the eink readers), but that free 3G is a hard bennie to beat if you want it.

I'd think that being able to comfortably read the stuff you want should take priority over other features. It would be best if you could get your hands on a few different readers and actually try to read a sample your intended content on them before deciding.
