Let's see ... there are supposed to be 2-3 million Kindle devices out there, about 5 million iPads, a gazillion of iPhones, iPods Touch and Blackberrys. All those are capable of reading Kindle eBooks.

Much good that does to people not speaking English !
And, save for the kindle, all the rest can read ePub too.

eInk/ePub reading devices sum up to a total of about 1.5-2 millions worldwide, most of them Sony.

And, with the market of e-book in some countries growing, that number is bound to grow, too. In France e-book market is negligible compared to p-books. But, when wandering in shop, you see more readers, people asking questions. It's a fresh market, still to be taken.

As you said yourself, the commen end-users simply want to read. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even know what this whole ePub <> mobi was all about ...

Yeap. I remember some chat about the fnacbook.
"3g is nice, but can you use a cable to get book from your computer to the reader".
me : "yes, most likely, to get books from other shops".
"oh, yeah, like amazon"
me : "Mmm, no, amazon don't use the same format, won't work"
See the "amazon" reaction. Even in France, "Amazon" and "kindle" still come to mind when speaking e-books. They could grab the French market easily, if they got their act together. But, if they don't react, the place will be taken already.
I'm thinking the fnac. The fnacbook provides the French reader with everything the kindle provides to US reader. Easy access to books everywhere.
But then, we're better off without amazon. One thing I'm happy about the e-book market in France, it's all ePub, with adept drm (or no drm). And hopefully, will stay that way. We don't need an other format. One is just the right number there

I don't want the format mess, exclusivity deals that amazon might bring.
