[Nook Color] Are the thumbnail jpgs necessary?

Hi,

I have a Nook Color and I was wondering if the .jpg thumbnails that Calibre transfers along with each book are necessary in any way. If they're not, is there a setting that prevents that from happening on specific devices? I own multiple devices and wouldn't want to disable thumbnails for devices that might actually need them for some purpose.

Normally I wouldn't mind having the thumbnails stored on my device. But in the case of the Nook Color, if I want to browse photos, the Gallery app displays every single image it finds on the device, so I have to scroll through a bunch of thumbnails looking for the pictures that I'd like to actually look at.

Ideally, the Gallery app would allow for some user customization so I could just have it display items in specific folders or something, but alas...it's kinda primitive.
