First time user unexpected behaviour

I just installed Calibre for the first time, in the hope that it will be more useful than Mobipocket which is frankly just a toy. This is literally the first time I have opened Calibre.

I clicked "Add books" and then selected an HTML file. Then I clicked "Open". The result in Calibre was a row in the main window:--

- The Title field was set to a name I did not specify, but somehow it had dreamed up a name that was not altogether random
- The Author(s) field was set to the file name, but without the .html qualifier.

When I selected more than one file at a time, it told me I had duplicates, which is not true. But when I chose to "ignore" there were two files with the same "random" title. What I actually wanted was to put more than one html file into the same ebook.

Is this the expected default behaviour?

I realize I can go in and "edit metadata" and correct this, but I just wondered if I had missed something.
