Jellby is correct. You won't feel a broken screen, because the top layer is plastic. The break is underneath in the substrate. Either an impact or twisting of the device can cause broken screens, and eInk screens are relatively fragile.

I don't know how or when it happened, but your device definitely has a broken screen. I don't think it had anything to do with the radiation from the scanner.
