One option if you have a compatible netbook is to switch the screen out for one of the PixelQi ones. It's not eInk, but looks very readable in sunlight.

I've got a samsung n130 and have toyed with the idea of putting one of those on for writing outside in the summer.

Not cheap but then new products never are
