There are several outdoor areas in Kyoto that are designated as non-smoking. I'm not talking about parks or malls, but regular streets! They have put up small smoking shelters off the side streets for those needing to smoke. As a smoker I would have been offended by that. Indoors, cigarette smoke coats surfaces with a thick and sticky resin which holds the smell, which is why despite air cleaners, smoking areas still smell so badly. When a chain-smoking neighbor moved out of her apartment, I watched as a professional cleaning service was called in to actually scour the walls and ceiling. They were a shade of yellow-brown when she left, and white when the cleaning service was finished...
