Actually, it looks like we all got sidetracked on fnatic's original post. He/She never asked about buying from other places, only about downloading. Therefore, DRM may not be an issue. So, let's resummarize:
1) Amazon books, no problem.
2) Non-DRM mobi, prc are no problem
3) Non-DRM just about anything else is easy to covert using Calibre
4) DRM (not from Amazon) is an issue (legal/ethical/technical) and only you can answer how big a problem that is for you in your jurisdiction.
In terms of buying books, if it is one of the many sources in category 2 or 3, then no problem.
Fnatic, we can probably give you more accurate statements if you care to describe the books you expect to download. I am sure that some books are difficult to get for the Kindle and others are difficult for other readers. I have found that everything I want is readily available on the Kindle.
