The "locked in" statement is more a subjective thing than anything else. There are lot of online stores, not Amazon, where Kindle users can buy MOBI books for their devices.

Your ability to find books depends of what you like and what you chose. For instance: I used to have a Nook but B&N does not have a good collection of computer books or programming so in real world, being able to read an epub book means nothing to me, because I can't read or buy what I need and like.

On the other hand, Amazon is selling all those computer books that I can't find at B&N. So, I sold my Nook and bought a Kindle, actually two: Kindle DXG and Kindle 3.

I am not interested on lending epub from any public library. I don't need it, don't want it, and like me there are lot of more people with same opinion. That does not mean is not yours or the same for those who like or really lend from public libraries, but again it is more a subjective thing than something related with the azw or epub format itself.
